Proving Ground: Tuff-N-Uff 158 Preview
Vince Morales and Daniel Lacerda headline at the Pearl, while Carol Massot and Hannah Silva fight for amateur gold.
Tuff-N-Uff 158: Morales vs. Lacerda is coming this Saturday, October 24, to the Pearl Theater inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the promotion’s eighth fight card of the year. With seven professional fights on the main card and six amateur fights on the preliminary card, there’s plenty of opportunity to see up-and-coming fighters alongside experienced professional talent.
First opened in 2007 and reopened in 2022 after its pandemic closure, the Pearl Theater is a uniquely intimate venue with a three-tier, crescent-shaped layout and no seat more than 120 feet from the stage. Saturday’s cage will be on the main floor beside it. Able to accommodate 2,500 guests, the Pearl Theater offers a close-up setting for a Saturday night of intense MMA action.
“We’re extremely excited to welcome our fans back to the Palms Casino Resort for the first time since June and bring another incredible night of Tuff-N-Uff action to the Pearl Theater,” said Tuff-N-Uff President Jeff Meyer in the event’s press release. “The Palms has become an important home for us in Las Vegas, and the atmosphere our fans create inside the Pearl is always special.”
With Tuff-N-Uff billing itself as the “Future Stars of MMA,” one might be surprised to find two UFC veterans in the bantamweight main event: American Vince “Vandetta” Morales (16-11) and Brazilian Daniel “Miojo” Lacerda (14-7). But Saturday’s card reflects both sides of Tuff-N-Uff’s role: giving experienced professionals another platform and developing amateur talent. The “Future Stars” portion will be on display in the women’s amateur flyweight championship fight between rising prospect Carol Massot (3-1) and the more experienced Hannah Silva (7-6).
Vince Morales vs. Daniel Lacerda
Vince Morales is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Colby Thickness in Perth, Australia, in May. He ended his second run in the UFC with four consecutive unanimous decision losses—one of them to rising contender Raul Rosas Jr. However, at age 35, he’s not ready to throw in the towel. Saturday gives him another chance to show what he can do in a main event.
Morales’s ability to endure tough matchups can’t be denied. He’s come a long way from his appearance on the Contender Series in July 2018, when he lost in the second round by rear-naked choke.
Training out of the well-known Las Vegas gym Syndicate MMA alongside Merab Dvalishvili, Morales, a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, possesses endurance not only on the feet but also in grappling, showing the ability to survive tight chokes and get out of difficult situations. His last two wins came by Peruvian necktie and D’Arce choke, submissions he continued hunting in his UFC matches. If the fight against Lacerda goes to the ground, this is one of Morales’s paths to victory.
He also possesses knockdown power and could finish Lacerda on the feet if he can keep up the pace needed to follow through. Morales does have a habit of ducking when throwing, however. If Lacerda can bring the knees, Morales could be caught by one if timed right.
Training out of RD Champions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Daniel Lacerda, the younger fighter at age 30, is coming off a first-round TKO loss to Andre Ewell at Karate Combat 62 in July. Before that, Lacerda had a three-fight winning streak across MMA and karate, including a win over Taron Grigoryan via ninja choke in the second round at Tuff-N-Uff 155, also in July. His two previous wins came by TKO: against Ashiek Ajim in MMA and Anvar Boynazarov in karate. He enters Saturday on a two-fight MMA winning streak.
Lacerda previously went 0-5 with one no contest in the UFC between October 2021 and February 2024. He has shown finishing ability on the feet and on the ground, with two TKOs and two submissions in his last four wins across both disciplines.
I see Lacerda as the faster fighter, but he struggles with pressure. Ewell overwhelmed him in his latest loss, and even in his win against Grigoryan, Grigoryan pressured him and dropped him with strikes before Lacerda recovered on the ground. The Ewell fight was under karate rules, but his response to that pressure is still worth considering. This will be a battle of Morales’s methodical forward pressure against Lacerda’s speed. Once it goes to the ground, either fighter can shine.
One question for Lacerda is that he has never gone the distance in MMA; many of his fights have ended with him either stopping his opponent or being stopped in the first round. Lacerda could catch Morales early, but given Morales’s endurance, I favor him if he can weather those opening exchanges. I’m going to make my own prediction and say Morales will win this fight by submission in the second round.
Carol Massot vs. Hannah Silva
Flyweights Carol Massot (3-1) and Hannah Silva (7-6) will face off for the Tuff-N-Uff Women’s Amateur Flyweight Championship. Originally from Brazil, Massot is a rising prospect out of Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas with a three-fight winning streak. Her last win came from a first-round armbar at Fierce Fighting Championship in June, and her two previous wins were by unanimous decision. She has also earned a win under the Tuff-N-Uff banner.
She looks smooth on the feet as well as on the ground. Her pedigree includes taking first place in the juvenile blue-belt medium-heavy division at both the 2022 IBJJF Pan and World Jiu-Jitsu Championships. She also won the heavy open class at the 2022 Pans and secured a gold medal at the 2020 Pan Kids Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
Silva’s fight record is longer than Massot’s but showcases the ups and downs of MMA competition. She’s been out of the cage for nearly a year and returns with the chance to shake off the ring rust against a less experienced opponent. Silva won an amateur MMA belt for Fierce Fighting Championship in 2023 and holds a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Silva is a competitor with a lot of endurance and a no-quit attitude, but she can be a bit undisciplined with her striking. When she’s on the ground, she truly shines. She has no losses by submission, so Massot faces a real test if they make it to the canvas. Three of Silva’s six losses came by KO/TKO and three by unanimous decision. Massot has no wins by KO/TKO, so I see her best path to victory as being the more active fighter and landing the cleaner shots throughout the fight.
